Fellsmere is the part of Indian River County that most people don't think about. No beach, no tourist strip, no chain restaurants for miles. What Fellsmere does have is wide-open ranch land, Blue Cypress Lake, and some of the best boondocking territory on the Treasure Coast. It's about 25 minutes west of our Vero Beach base on CR-512, and we make regular service runs out here because the RV owners in this area actually need us more than most.
Here's why: there are no hookups out in Fellsmere's ranch country. If you're camping near Blue Cypress Lake or parked at a hunting camp west of town, your generator is your everything. It runs your AC, charges your batteries, powers your fridge. When it quits, you're stuck. We've driven out to the lake on more than a few emergency calls where someone's Onan wouldn't fire up and the inside of their rig was hitting 95 degrees. We carry the parts for most common generator repairs, including fuel pump kits, carburetors, and voltage regulators.
Solar installation is the other big request we get from Fellsmere campers. If you're tired of depending on a generator, solar is the answer, and this area is perfect for it. Open sky, no shade from buildings, and Florida sunshine 300 days a year. We install rooftop panels, wire MPPT charge controllers, and upgrade lead-acid battery banks to lithium. A proper solar setup lets you camp at Blue Cypress Lake for days without starting a generator once.
The Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival, held every January, is the town's biggest event. It draws crowds from across the state, and some of those folks roll in with their RVs. We've fielded calls during festival weekends for AC issues, dead batteries, and a slideout that wouldn't retract. The festival campground isn't a full-service RV park, so problems pop up when rigs don't have the infrastructure they're used to.
We also see a lot of rodent damage on rigs stored at Fellsmere properties. Mice and rats love to chew through wiring harnesses, insulation around plumbing lines, and even AC ductwork. If your RV has been sitting on a rural lot for a few months, we strongly recommend a full inspection before you hit the road. We've found gnawed wires that were one bad vibration away from a short circuit.
